Chiropractic First has been in business for over 30 years, but Dr. Meggie Smith has been the owner now for 4 years. Chiropractic First doctors, Dr. Meggie and Dr. Will Vogds (pictured above) provides light touch chiropractic which improves emotional and mental lives, as well addressing pain and injury. We help people with mental and emotional concerns like anxiety, depression, insomnia and digestive problems using a type of chiropractic that presses as hard on your back as you would press on your eyelid. It is incredibly gentle and yet incredibly powerful because we are improving your body's ability to heal, rather than forcing your body back into place.
While this is widely practiced on the coasts, there are few doctors in the Midwest. Meggie was inspired to provide access to this powerful type of healing to the North Shore where she grew up.
A little bit about Meggie
Favorite Book: Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert is certainly one of my new favorites. It's about creativity, but really equally applicable to running a business, raising a family or any other aspect of life that requires you to trust yourself and create new things.
Favorite way to spend time (when not with clients): Last year I won a membership to the Evanston Athletic Club at the Woman's Club of Evanston spring benefit. I used that opportunity to try rock climbing at EAC and now I'm hooked! I climb a few times a week.
Best part about managing a business: I love being able to use Chiropractic First as a vehicle for community growth. We have patients who schedule their appointments together so they have an excuse to see each other and bring in other practitioners to share their expertise with our patients. One couple even met in the office and is now married! I love being able to bring people together and make a powerful difference in the lives of our community members.
Mottos: Healing is not about going back to where you were before, it is about becoming greater than you can possibly imagine.
Favorite place to spend time at in downtown Evanston: I really like Gigi Bottega...I get tons of complements on the jewelry that I buy there. And TruFit personal training. I have done personal training and nutrition work with Isabelle Libman of IzzyFit.
Secret interests: In the summer I ferment ginger beer and it is really good! I can't seem to make it work in the winter. Can talents be seasonal?
“I like having the freedom to be as creative as I want - both in my teaching and studio programming,” explains Nicholas Beem, owner of Grateful Yoga. Nick opened Grateful Yoga six years ago, to provide a place to learn and practice mindful yoga in a peaceful environment. The highly trained teachers are committed to sharing the full spectrum of yoga, not just the postures. Nicholas explains that, “we value breathing, meditation, and relaxation of acrobatics or sweat.”

James Pomerantz, pictured above on the right with business partner Jim Hurley, opened Bat 17 10 years ago because, as he says, "it is what I know." Bat 17 is a breakfast, lunch and dinner pub that serves award winning food and beer, and a lot of it! If you're looking to fill up on good food, Bat 17 does not skimp on the portions so get your appetite ready!
